GENRE

a type or category of literary composition. Major genres of literature include fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama.

FICTION

any work of prose that tells an invented or imaginary story. The primary forms of fiction are novels and short stories.

PROSE

a broad term that is used to describe all writing that is not drama or poetry, including fiction and nonfiction. Types of prose include novels, short stories, essays, and news stories.

SHORT STORY

a brief work of fiction. They are typically crafted carefully to develop a plot, a conflict, characters, a setting, a mood, and a theme, all within relatively few pages.

NOVEL

a long work of fiction. Often novels have involved plots, many characters, and numerous settings.

PLOT

a series of events related to a central conflict, or struggle. A plot typically introduces a conflict, develops it, and eventually resolves it. Contains exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.

EXPOSITION

provides background info., often about the characters, setting or conflict.

RISING ACTION

occurs as the conflict is developed and intensified.

CLIMAX

the high point of interest and suspense in a literary work. Also the turning point of action.

FALLING ACTION

consists of all the events that follow the climax.

RESOLUTION

point at which the central conflict is resolved or ended.
