-An expert sailor who guids a ship across the ocean -Henry and Magellan were navigators

Caravel

-A sailing vessel that was stronger than previous ones. -Designed by Prince Henry's shipbuilders

Astrolabe

-A device used by sailors to measure latitude -Created under Prince Henry's leadership

Circumnavigate

-To travel completely around the earth -Magellan was the first person to circumnavigate the world

Henry The Navigator

-Ruled Portugal at a time when they had many advances and proved the journey to Asia not as fearful as they thought -Was in rule when the astrolabe, caravel, and more were invented

Ferdinand Magellan

-Portugese explorer whose crew was first to sail around the world -Circumnavigated and did this at a time where Portugal was becoming more powerful

Cape Bojador

-An extention of the western Sahara coast into the Atlantic Ocean -This is where Prince Henry and his crew turned around due to fear

Versailles

-King Louis's palace outside of Paris -Pesants paid taxes on it and nobles lived there with king. France was in debt due to all of the money they spent on it because they couldnt pay for it

Divine Right

-A belief that the right to rule comes directly from god -The people didnt choose the king, many of the Europeans of that time beleived in it.

- Louis sent France to war to gain new territories. All of the money spent on war was too much, so France couldn't pay it.

-King of France from 1643-1715 -He was and absolute monarch

-To have complete control over the kingdom -Louis XIV was one

-Cardinal and cheif minister to King Louis XIII of France -Worked to increase power of the king

Democracy

-A system in which the people are governed by elected representatives -There were no democracys in France, people barely had heard of it

Ferdinand and Isabella

- Spanish king and queen who ruled the first united Spanish Kingdom -Also worked to limit power of nobles

-Different from France, had limited power over people

Peter the Great

-Emporer of Russia from 1682-1725 -Also limited power of people and lived in a magnificent palace like Louis XIV
