1

How antibiotics are produced

-organism that is generating the antibiotic is fermented in stell vats on a large scale -in 1954, 2 million lbs per year were being developed -today,more than 50 mil lbs per year are made

2

How antibiotics work against bacteria?

-inhibit cell wall synthesis -inhibit protein synthesis -injure the cell membrane -inhibit nucleic acid synthesis -inhibit synthesis of metabolites

3

Inhibit Cell wall synthesis

1) antibiotics can: -breakdown existing cell wall - prevent synthesis of new lipids

4

inhibit protein synthesis

1)antibiotics can: -damage ribosomes(where proteins r made) -inhibit peptide bond formation(what holds the protiens together)

5

injure the cell membrane

antibiotics can: - change the permeability (what goes in and out) which can result in a loss of metabolites such as enzymes from the cell

6

inhibit nucleic acid synthesis

antibiotics can: - stop transcription and translation so the bacterial cells cant replace

7

inhibit synthesis of metabolites

antibiotics can: -stop enzyme production by interferring with the organelles that produce them

8

2 categories of antibiotics

-narrow spectrum -broad spectrum

9

narrow spectrum

-affects either gram + or gram - bacteria -ex: penicillin

10

broad spectrum

-affects both gram + and gram - bactera -ex:tetracycline
