A comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles of electricity and magnetism
PHYS 102.1x is an exciting and comprehensive introduction to electricity and magnetism, designed as the second semester of a standard college physics sequence. This course offers a deep dive into the fundamental principles that govern electrical and magnetic phenomena, providing students with a solid foundation in this crucial area of physics.
While these topics will be briefly reviewed as needed, students without prior exposure may need to invest extra study time to keep up with the course material.
This course is ideal for college students majoring in physics, engineering, or related fields, as well as science enthusiasts looking to deepen their understanding of electricity and magnetism. It's also suitable for professionals in technical fields seeking to refresh or expand their knowledge of these fundamental concepts.
The principles of electricity and magnetism covered in this course are fundamental to numerous real-world applications. Students will be equipped to:
The course is structured into 5 weekly learning sequences, each containing:
The 6th week is dedicated to an online exam that assesses the student's understanding of the course material.
Note: While no specific textbook is required, students are encouraged to refer to any recent freshman physics textbook. Reading assignments will be provided by topic, including links to several free online physics resources.

Electricity is everywhere. Learn about real world applications of electric circuits and the techniques for analyzing and designing circuits. The process of human civilization is almost the process of studying and utilizing electricity. Circuits are direct tools for using electricity to serve human beings. This course on Circuit Principles teaches you the basic methods of analyzing and designing circuits.
The primary goal of the course is to enable the student to understand what semiconductors are, and why they are important to the electronics industry. Students will first learn and understand why some materials are insulators and others are conductors, and will learn how these properties can be modified. The course also explores other situations where the conductivity of an insulator can be drastically changed, such as the situation inside a bolt of lightning or inside a semiconductor.
Physicists use math all of the time in nearly everything that they work on. This course will help you understand how math is interconnected and recognize that math involves a handful of simple ideas that repeat. By the end of the course, you will be able to re-derive important formulas from basic principles or know precisely where to look them up and use them.
