Learn how government, the private sector, and other actors can support sustainable urban development
"Sustainable Cities" is an innovative and comprehensive course that delves into the critical challenges and immense opportunities presented by rapid urban growth worldwide. As we face an estimated influx of three billion people into cities by 2050, this course equips students with the knowledge and tools to understand and address the complex issues surrounding urban sustainability, productivity, and inclusivity.
This course is designed for intermediate-level learners and does not have any specific prerequisites. However, a general interest in sustainable development, urban planning, or related fields would be beneficial.

We don't have one planet for humans and another for other species. If we wish to avoid pandemics from zoonoses, such as COVID-19 and other types of influenza, we must address direct and indirect drivers such as human ecological disruption and unsustainable consumption. Drawing lessons and reflecting on challenges from UNESCO Biosphere reserves, Professor Serge Morand presents the latest knowledge and management approaches developed under the One Health approach.
Would you like to see your neighbourhood become more liveable and sustainable? To alleviate city-specific challenges – from urban heat islands to mental health issues – we need to first change our minds. From wanting to control nature to leveraging its power, we need to allow nature to do what it does best: grow. Join Wageningen University & Research and rewild your city. With gardens, parks and ponds, with indigenous plants and animals, we will see both ecosystems and our living environment restored. Enroll now.
This MOOC is the first part of an interconnected series of four MOOCs on Designing Resilient Regenerative Systems (DRRS) which bring together science, design and transformative praxis as a fluid, intervention-based and synergistic process for addressing complex challenges. This is explored through extending our worldviews, reframing complexity, designing as nature, activating our minds through physical movement, and connecting with new communities of practice. Successful completion of MOOC#1 is your gateway to enter the ETH Zurich DRRS executive degree program, with the first Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS).
